How often have you read a biblical story and wondered: What does this actually have to do with me? Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses or David – people who lived thousands of years ago, in a different world, a different culture and under completely different circumstances. We read of desert wanderings, wells and altars, of kings and prophets, of wars and covenants. And it is easy to get the impression that we are reading the history of a long-vanished world. Perhaps that is precisely where our mistake lies. Perhaps the Bible never intended to make us into historians, but into people who learn to look at themselves.
