History at Arkia: First female pilot appointed captain of a passenger jet

Alongside this special occasion, there is another milestone: the new captain Adar Medotzki is following in her father’s footsteps, who has been serving as a captain at Arkia for more than 15 years. For the first time in the airline’s history, a father and daughter will be serving simultaneously as captains.

Last week, Arkia held a festive and moving ceremony marking the appointment of two new captains at the airline. Idan Bahbut and Adar Medotzki successfully completed the demanding training program and were appointed as captains of the company’s Airbus A320/321 fleet.

Adar’s appointment represents a milestone in Arkia’s history in two respects: she is the first female pilot to be appointed captain of a passenger jet at the airline. At the same time, it marks the first time a father and daughter will serve together as captains at Arkia. Her father, Tal Medotzki, has been a captain at Arkia for more than 15 years and flies with the Embraer fleet. Now his daughter Adar has also joined the ranks of the company’s captains.

The appointments of Adar and Idan came after a long and professional training process. Having successfully completed it, both now form part of the captain team of Arkia’s Airbus A320/321 fleet.

Yotam Galaon, Captain and Vice President of Flight Operations at Arkia, stated: “This is a moving day for Arkia. The appointment to captain is a significant moment in the professional life of every pilot, and I congratulate Idan and Adar on their long journey, their dedication and their achievement. Adar’s story is particularly moving – a father and daughter serving as captains at the same airline, and a family story intertwined with generations of Israeli endeavor. This is precisely the kind of connection we cherish at Arkia – people, family, Israeli identity and professionalism. I wish Idan and Adar thousands of safe and successful flight hours and open skies ahead.”
