The fourth MEAD Conference (Middle East-America Dialogue), a forum for strategic dialogue between the United States, Israel, and Middle Eastern states, took place in Washington last week — at one of the most sensitive and significant moments since its founding. The conference convened against the backdrop of uncertainty over the future of the confrontation with Iran, ongoing threats in the region, and ahead of two elections that will shape the further development of relations between states: elections in Israel and the midterm elections in the United States.
This year, representatives from 24 countries came to Washington — from the United States, Israel, and the states of the Middle East. That is the largest number since the conference was founded. Twelve of them are Middle Eastern states, including some that maintain no diplomatic relations with Israel but nonetheless chose to send representatives. This is made possible by the confidentiality rules upon which the conference has been based since its founding.
