Yesterday, a memorial event was held at Israel’s National Library in Jerusalem, not far from the Knesset, commemorating the victims of October 7th and the fallen of the war. Books of remembrance there tell the stories of those we have lost.
“We write life”
I stood before all those faces — 2,054 of them on the digital memorial wall — and suddenly a strange, painful feeling came over me: somehow, I know them all.
Of course, I didn’t know each of them personally. But over the past three years, these faces have become part of our lives. We saw them on social media, on television, and in the newspapers. We heard their stories, met their parents, their partners, their children. We saw photos from weddings, travels, army service, and school days. People who were complete strangers to us three years ago now belong to the greater Israeli family. And every face has a name. Behind every name stands an entire world that was suddenly cut short.
“Even in death, I live on”
