Three years after October 7, large parts of Gaza lie in ruins, Hamas has been severely hit militarily, and the Palestinian population has paid a devastating price. By Western logic, this does not look like a victory. But Hamas calculates differently. It measures its success not by what Gaza has lost, but by the damage inflicted on Israel and the impact that October 7 has had worldwide. That is precisely why it speaks today not of defeat, but of a historic victory.

On the third anniversary of October 7, the spokesman for Hamas’s military wing, “Abu Obeida,” published a message that offers a remarkable insight into Hamas’s way of thinking. It reads:

“Three years have passed since the ‘holy crossing’ — that day when the arms of the fighters shattered the occupation’s security concept once and for all. Through Allah’s grace, there is no longer any deterrence, no decision, and no advance warning.
