Israel’s prime minister says the battle for young Western minds is now a war front, and he has named the enemy.
In an interview this week with Channel 14, Benjamin Netanyahu described disinformation as the “eighth front” in Israel’s war, alleging that Qatari and Russian operations were using bots to turn young Americans and Europeans against Israel. In the full interview, he went further: “We know that it’s Qatar and some Russian operations that have this traditional anti-Semitic thing that appeals to the ‘woke right’ in America” and elsewhere.
A charge with a paper trail
This is not a new accusation. At the UN last month, Netanyahu said Qatar began pouring enormous sums into American universities and toxic media outlets like Al Jazeera decades ago, and did the same in Europe.
Doha pushed back against claims that the growing criticism of Israel around the world, particularly among younger people, is the result of organized influence campaigns. In Qatar’s telling, young Westerners simply believe what they see.
But the official record is less flattering for Qatar. In 2020, the US Justice Department required Al Jazeera’s youth brand, AJ+, to register as a foreign agent after finding that Qatar controlled and funded it.
And AJ+ was at it again this week. The Al Jazeera platform seized on an on-air insult against opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot on Channel 14, telling viewers that Netanyahu’s camp commits theft, murder and genocide.
Russia’s record is documented too. In 2023, France’s foreign ministry said an operation exploiting the Gaza war to stoke tensions in Paris was carried out by bots affiliated with the Russian Doppelgänger network. And when Channel 12 investigated bot activity in Israeli social media earlier this year, an expert told the program: “The strongest [bot-farmers] in the world are the Russians, and the Qataris after that.”
Netanyahu:
They’re trying to poison young American minds, young European minds against us.
We’ll need to do a lot of AI work there because it’s done with bots. https://t.co/smBEmxk6ao

Moscow, named
Netanyahu’s willingness to name Russia is itself news. For years he carefully protected his channel to Vladimir Putin. On Saturday, presenting Israel’s new security doctrine, he accused Russia of cooperating with Iran and of letting antisemitic bot networks target Israel, saying the two countries’ interests sometimes clash.
He also credited Ukrainian strikes on Yandex data centers with wiping out 60% of Russian online activity against Israel.

Netanyahu’s one overreach was the word “everything.” Asked about the settler-violence narrative, he replied, “Yes, everything is done with bots.” Yet in the same interview he acknowledged a violent fringe of a couple hundred youths and said he had ordered the Shin Bet to crack down on them.
His real argument is stronger than his phrasing: a small criminal fringe is being inflated by foreign networks into an indictment of entire communities. That is how influence operations work. They rarely invent from nothing. They find something real and make it enormous.
Closer to home
The most detailed public case of Qatari money buying influence over Israel’s own narrative comes from Israeli investigators. Netanyahu aide Jonatan Urich has admitted to investigators that he received “hundreds of thousands of shekels” from Qatar, according to reports of his interrogation. Urich was not running bots. But if Doha would pay to shape how Israelis see Qatar, it is hardly a stretch that it would pay to shape how Americans see Israel.
The prime minister is right that this is a front, and that it will be fought with technology as much as talking points.
Qatar and Russia have already shown with their money what they want young Westerners to believe.
Israel’s job is to make sure they don’t get it.
