Near the Western Wall, a 2,700-year-old seal was recently found. In ancient Hebrew the inscription reads: “Belonging to the governor of the city.” On the seal are two men facing one another. Their clothing reaches to the knees and is striped.
Officials with the Israel Antiquities Authority believe that this seal was a gift or parcel delivery for the governor. A “Governor of Jerusalem” is mentioned twice in the Bible
The seal is firm confirmation of the existence of this office. Furthermore, it is yet more evidence that the biblical report is accurate, and that a Jewish state existed in this land, centered on Jerusalem, many thousands of years ago.
