In the very heart of modern Jerusalem lies the Russian Compound, with its stunning Orthodox Church and newly renovated hotel.

Known as Sergei’s Courtyard, the compound was built in 1890 by an uncle of Tsar Nicholas II. All of the building material for the Renaissance-style construction was imported from Russia. For more than a century, it has stood as an architectural wonder, the main tower especially looking as though it were taken from a chessboard. The compound’s splendid gardens, where wealthy Russian pilgrims and dignitaries were once entertained, have also been restored.
