Alexander Bogen (originally Katzenbogen, 1916-2010), was born in Estonia and grew up in Vilna. During World War II, he escaped the Vilna Ghetto and fought in the Jewish partisan militia called “Revenge.”
Bogen began his art schooling before the war and continued after it was over. He moved to Israel with his family in 1951 and taught art at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is a celebrated artist in Poland as well as in Israel. His triptych Apocalypse (1992) featuring a crucified Jesus is on display at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem.
In this three-fold semi-abstract painting, Jesus is painted blue, as is the background, and a little girl is hiding and holding a doll. Bogen encountered this girl bearing a yellow star and clutching her doll in the Vilna Ghetto, and she appears in many of his works.
