“This project we are initiating is a game-changer for Jerusalem. It is the biggest, most significant and essential project for the future of the city,” said Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat. “Jerusalem after the completion of this new business district will be different from before, transformed from a city with stalled economic growth and a declining population to an attractive city for young people.”
The Israeli government is investing 1.4 billion shekels ($364 million) into the 700,000 square meter Gateway Project. It will stretch from the famous “Chords Bridge” at the entrance to the city, past Binyanei Ha’uma (the International Convention Center) and up Ben Zvi Boulevard to the Supreme Court and Knesset (parliament building).
Today, much of this area at the overcrowded entrance into Jerusalem is undeveloped with broken down buildings and unused parking lots. The new district is slated to provide commercial space in 24 office buildings, including nine 36-story high-rises, as well as cultural venues, shopping malls and several hotels.
