Meet Medad Ashkenazi, who during his service in the Israeli army worked for the Coordination and Liaison Office where he handled contacts with the United Nations.
For the past eight years, Ashkenazi has been working as a security guard at the UN, and for two years now, he has been a personal guard of the secretary-general. Ashkenazi was offered his current position after another Israeli guard named Osnat was promoted to a more senior position within the UN’s security apparatus.
Nor was Ashkenazi the only Israeli considered for the job. Another guard named Kfir, a former agent in the Shin Bet security service, was also in the running to be one of Ban’s personal bodyguards.
