(TPS) The mounting wave of terror attacks in Judea and Samaria continued over the weekend, with shootings near Shechem (Nablus) and in the Hebron area.
On Sunday morning, Arab terrorists fired at a bus and a taxi in a drive-by attack. The bus driver, 40, who was on his way to pick up school children, was lightly injured in his back. The bus and taxi were damaged by the gunfire.
On Saturday night, terrorists shot at an IDF force that was engaged in activity in the village of Burka in the Shomron Regional Division and at the community of Beit El.
Yossi Dagan, head of the Samaria Council, attacked the government which, “despite the clear increase in terrorism and its severity, has not ordered a large-scale operation to damage the terrorist infrastructure in the Palestinian Authority.”
“Another serious event that ended almost in a miracle, this government is abandoning its residents to a wave of terrorism, which the Palestinian Authority is heating up. This government refuses to recognize reality, refuses to launch an operation, refuses to collect the weapons, refuses to return the security checkpoints, we see attack after attack, the writing is on the wall and it’s bloody, there are shooting incidents and wounded people here day after day, this could end in disaster,” he warned.
He called on the government to “come to its senses, and announce the launch of a broad operation to damage the terrorist infrastructure in Judea and Samaria. Stop abandoning the residents of Samaria and the rest of Israel to this wave of terror.”
The region has recently experienced an uptick in the number of shooting attacks in Judea and Samaria since the beginning of the year. About 80 such attacks have occurred since the beginning of 2022, compared to about 50 shooting attacks in all of 2021, 48 in 2020, and 61 in 2019.
Israel’s security system is on high alert as it fears a wave of terrorism during the High Holidays.
Israel’s security establishment held earlier this month an assessment regarding the security preparations for the High Holidays. In the discussion, Prime Minister Yair Lapid was presented with about 70 concrete warnings of plans by terror organizations to carry out terrorist attacks in Israel during the holidays. The security system has registered a record number of alerts for attempted attacks in recent months, which are only increasing.
