“Israel’s Chief Rabbi: Cease Extra Prayers for Rain”

 That was the headline carried by several newspaper and online portals at the end of January. Chief Rabbi David Lau called upon the people of Israel to stop reciting a special Jewish prayer for rain following heavy storms and even snow in the north. “Praise God, we were privileged and the heavens opened up,” said Lau, urging the people to switch to a prayer beseeching the Almighty to continue blessing the land.

On the last weekend of January alone, the water level of the Sea of Galilee rose by a full 15 centimeters (5.91 inches). It was snowing heavily on the Golan Heights and in Safed. Also in Jerusalem and Hebron, there was a high chance of snow, but, much to the disappointment of local children, there was too little precipitation during the freezing temperatures.
