An Unorthodox Fight

You don’t see this every day: an Orthodox Jew celebrating victory at the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition which was held in Israel.

Elazar Tariku, the Israeli fighter, was so overwhelmed by his victory that he pulled off his overheated, sweaty shirt, and with only his tzitzit (undergarment tassels, see Numbers 15:38), he ran up and shouted the Shema Yisrael (Hear O Israel) prayer over the loudspeaker!

At least here in Israel he didn’t need to fear anti-Semitic incidents which are still common in many places around the world, especially during sporting events. When Elazar, who comes from the coastal town of Ashkelon, is not in the ring, he teaches marital arts and self-defense to the Israel Police force.
