Israelis believe that what happens in America is either happening or will happen here

Following the Capitol Hill riot, I spent the day following social media and the evening news broadcasts of Israel’s three main TV channels, which are still popular enough to set the tone and give the desired framing to events to fit the political agenda of the Left. The three channels gave the exact same impression: Like Pearl Harbor, Kennedy and 9/11, January 6th, 2021 is a date that will live in infamy. According to this revised view of history, these events were not attacks against America, but against democracy, an extremely important nuance.

The evening news also gave the impression that Israelis are internalizing the events that are taking place in the US, all except for Prime Minister Netanyahu, who initially asked his party to not speak out on what happened in Washington. Given that Trump was so unreservedly pro-Israel, one might think that all Israelis would regret his departure. But the Israeli Left is just as jubilant as the American Democrats, while the Israeli Right is as depressed as the Republicans.
