I can remember.

Thirteen years ago, Iran was already enriching uranium to alarming levels. It was already clear that this was not your “garden variety” civilian nuclear energy program. Here in Israel, I can remember the concern and the deliberations:

  • Should we bomb?
  • Could we bomb?
  • Would we even succeed?
  • Who would stand with us?
  • Who would stand against us?

My concern about Iran and the bombing decision led me to join a symbolic gathering of 75 men at Gideon’s Spring in August of 2012. The parallel was to recall Gideon’s few fighting against the Midianites’ many. To offer up united prayers regarding the Iranian threat. To take some initiative and not feel powerless. We even “reenacted” Gideon and his men blowing their shofars at night. I half imagined that we would suddenly see Israeli F-16s over us that very minute high in the night sky roaring eastward through the Jezreel Valley on their way to bomb Iran!

There were no planes on high that...
