Shortly after the nation of Israel was delivered from slavery in Egypt, the people complained to Moses: “Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? … Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying … it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” (Exodus 14) The secret of freedom is courage, for most people are not “go-getters.” In spite of all the evil at that time, the people of Israel had become used to slavery.
When the children of Israel were at a dead end, between the Red Sea and the Egyptian army, they had to deal with fear. Freedom and deliverance are always the consequences of affliction, sorrow and evil. To free oneself from these things is so risky that not everyone has the courage to do it.
