At least two Israelis were killed on Tuesday, including an 80-year-old woman, as rockets fired by terrorist groups from the Gaza Strip rained down on the coastal cities of Ashkelon and Ashdod. A further 23 people have been wounded, three seriously.
Over 200 rockets were fired toward the two Israeli cities in the early afternoon, several scoring direct hits on apartment buildings and other structures. Some 130,000 residents of Ashkelon have been ordered to remain in their bomb shelters until further notice.
Israeli forces have been retaliating against terrorist targets in Gaza. A military spokesman reported that one of the retaliatory strikes had killed the commander of the rocket crews of the Gaza-based terrorist group Islamic Jihad.
Officials have warned of several more days of heavy fighting.
