Israeli media monitors saw the broadcast as a blatant effort to encourage even more Palestinians to engage in brutal, merciless violence against even unarmed Israelis.
It was one of the incidents that set the tone for the Second Intifada. IDF reservists Vadim Nurzhitz and Yossi Avrahami had taken a wrong turn and ended up in the de facto Palestinian capital of Ramallah. They were taken to a local police station, but the PA security forces did little to protect them from a wild mob that ended up butchering the two Israelis in the most horrific way possible. The images that later made their way to the media demonstrated clearly, in the minds of most Israelis, why peace was not yet possible. Average Palestinians had not yet been educated for coexistence, in accordance with the so-called “Oslo Accords.”
Israel was able to identify a number of the killers thanks to the photos and video clips shared enthusiastically by Arab media. Three of them remain in Israeli prisons. It was these three that PA TV recently honored.
