Ilhan Omar: Israel’s New Enemy in Congress Speaks Out
In first interview since becoming first Muslim women in Congress, Ilhan Omar again slams the Jewish state
Newly-elected Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, one of the first of two Muslim women ever elected to Congress, used her first public interview to bash Israel on Yahoo News.
Omar was elected to a district in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she immigrated with her family from Somalia and became a US citizen in the year 2000. The Somali community in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul urban area is one of the largest in the US.
Omar compared Israeli government policies to those of Iran and Saudi Arabia, refusing to acknowledge the well-known fact that Israeli law respects the religious beliefs of all its citizens. “When I see Israel institute laws that recognize it as a Jewish state and does not recognize the other religions that are living in it and we still uphold it as a democracy in the Middle East, I almost chuckle,” she scoffed.
The false notion that Israel’s self-definition as a Jewish state does not recognize equal rights for her non-Jewish citizens is the “apartheid” narrative, word-for-word, used by Israel’s enemies around the world. Given the fact that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East where freedom of all religions is protected by law, it appears that America’s newly-elected government official is simply repeating the anti-Israel, anti-Semitic propaganda rhetoric she grew up with.
“I support and participate in the BDS boycott movement,” she boasted on the broadcast. Omar is one of only two members of Congress to openly support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel. Chillingly, the congresswoman now serves as a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
In what could be seen as a veiled threat, Omar once tweeted, “Israel has hypnotized the world. May Allah awaken the people to see the evil that Israel is doing (#Gaza #Palestine #Israel)". Apparently, invoking the name of her god to punish Israel and the Jews is an acceptable approach to her political agenda.
