Evil is part of our lives, whether we like it or not. This does not mean we love evil, but evil accompanies even those who strive for good. And this is in accordance with God’s will.
In Isaiah (45:7) we read:
“I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.”
At the beginning of all things, the Bible (Genesis 1:31) tells us:
And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
How are we to understand these passages when taken together? We are told in one that God created evil, but at the same time that everything He made was very good.
This knot is easier to untie in other languages, some of which translate the Hebrew word for “evil” (ra -רע) as calamity or misfortune, and thus escape the question.
