A few weeks after the terror massacre in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem set up the “Memorial Wall for the Murdered and Fallen” at its gates. It displays the photos, names, and ages of the those killed that day, as well as the Israeli soldiers who have since fallen in the war.
The installation spans 20 meters in width and 3.5 meters in height. In the entrance area of the new library building, it is also shown on a large screen. The project is part of a national initiative to document and commemorate the events of October 7. The wall is regularly updated, allowing visitors to engage in personal mourning while participating in collective remembrance.
Following numerous requests from Israel and abroad to use the material for local commemorative events, the library decided to make the Memorial Wall publicly accessible. As of now, the files can be downloaded for free and used both digitally and in print—for example, in schools, communities, synagogues, or public institutions.
The project is part of the library’s extensive documentation effort titled “Documenting October 7 and Its Aftermath,” which collects and preserves testimonies, reports, and recordings from those days. This includes hundreds of thousands of photos and videos that circulated on social media following the attacks. This ensures not only the remembrance of the victims but also the creation of a historical archive that will remain accessible to future generations.

By opening the project to the public, the National Library sends a clear message: remembrance should not remain visible only in Jerusalem but wherever people wish to honor the memory of the victims of October 7.
