In addition to the bodies of two IDF soldiers, Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul, whose bodies were snatched by Hamas after being killed in action during Operation Protective Edge, Israel yesterday lifted a gag order on two additional Israelis being held by Hamas in Gaza.
However both of these missing Israelis crossed the Gaza perimeter fence of their own accord and were promptly arrested and incarcerated in Gaza.
Avraham Mengistu left his home in the southern city of Ashkelon on September 8, 2014 and crossed into Gaza along Zikim beach. After setting off alarms on the electric fence the IDF scrambled troops and helicopters to the scene only to observe Mengistu continuing walking along the beach into Gaza. The troops fired in the air as a warning sign, and called on Mengisto to return to Israel, but he ignored them.
He was arrested by Hamas and interrogated. Israel has no further information regarding him. Hamas acknowledged arresting and questioning him but also stated that they had since released him and they do not believe that he is any longer in Gaza possibly having crossed into Sinai via the smuggling tunnels.
Mengistu was known to have mental issues and was known to social services organizations in his home town Ashkelon.
A second citizen, a Bedouin resident of the south also also crossed the Gaza border into the Strip of his own accord in April 2015. The young Bedouin is said to be mentally ill, and had tried to cross into Gaza in the past.
