Syrian media claimed that Israeli aircraft struck near Damascus early Friday morning, and a short time later loud explosions were heard in Tel Aviv.
According to Syria, Israel Air Force jets operating in Lebanese airspace fired a number of missiles at targets in the vicinity of Damascus. Most of the Israeli missiles were intercepted by Syrian air defenses, the reports asserted.
But it appears that at least one of those Syrian air defense missiles went astray, traversed Israeli airspace, and exploded over the Mediterranean Sea near enough to be heard in Tel Aviv.
Air raid sirens did not sound in Israel in keeping with the IDF’s policy to not spark alarm over projectiles that will not land in populated areas.
Military officials refused to comment on the Syrian media reports.
