The UN Security Council has adopted the American initiative to deploy an international force in the Gaza Strip. This US proposal is causing serious concern in Jerusalem. The biggest doubt is whether the terrorist organization Hamas will actually be disarmed, even though the resolution explicitly makes that a condition. At the same time, fears are growing in Jerusalem over Article 7, which Israeli experts believe could be used as a back door to establishing a “Palestinian state.” The proposal was submitted to the Security Council by Israel’s closest ally in Washington, so Israel has been extremely careful not to oppose it openly.
