The weekly portion Bo describes precisely such a moment: the transition between darkness and light, between fear and freedom, between the known and the courage to face the unknown. This gate of haste that the Torah opens for us poses the same question as back then: When does the moment come when we simply must go?
The Exodus from Egypt does not happen in a moment of calm. It does not occur after everything has fallen into place, after the fear has dissipated, or after the picture has become clear. The Exodus from Egypt takes place exactly at the moment when the tension reaches its peak, in the night between darkness and light.
