Weekly Portion – פְּקוּדֵי – וַיַּקְהֵל – Vayakhel-Pekudei – And He Assembled / Accounting; Exodus 35:1-38:20/21-40:38; 1 Kings 7:40-50/51-8:21

After the sin of the Golden Calf, a heavy shadow hangs over the people of Israel. Barely freed from slavery, the newly won freedom already threatened to shatter again amid the chaos of human fear, impatience, and desire. Yet precisely in this moment, a new chapter begins. Moses gathers the people once more. From dispersion comes assembly, from crisis emerges construction. The Torah shows us a profound idea here: Redemption does not end with liberation; it only begins where a people comes together again to create space for God’s presence.

This time, two weekly portions are read on Shabbat: Vayakhel and Pekudei, which together form the solemn conclusion of the Book of Exodus. The opening word “And he assembled” is by no means self-evident.
