And against the background of the well-documented anti-Israel bias at the world body, they were surprised at what they found.
“What particularly struck me in Israel was the cosmopolitan atmosphere in the Land,” said the UN ambassador from Sierra Leone, Adikalie Foday Sumah. “Israelis, Christians, Jews, and Muslims live together in harmony. I was surprised when I heard Arabs speaking Hebrew and Jews who spoke Arabic in Jerusalem’s Old City. I discovered a peaceful coexistence in Israel which I had no idea existed. Previously, I had always thought that discrimination was prevalent in Israel. But what I saw here touched me very deeply.”
“In my view the cards have been completely reshuffled,” Sumah continued. “I now see Israel from quite a different perspective.”
