Last week’s elction left the political landscape in a state of uncertainty, and as party leaders prepare to meet with President Isaac Herzog, the next steps are crucial for the future of governance in Israel.
As it stands, opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot is expected to receive the most recommendations to form the next government, with significant support from his bloc and the Arab parties. This could grant him a total of 67 recommendations, while Benjamin Netanyahu may struggle due to dissent among his coalition partners.
For Netanyahu, forming a coalition is no easy task. With only 53 seats, he might need to entice members from the opposition, a risky move that could undermine his own party’s campaign promises.
Eisenkot faces similar challenges. He could potentially reach out to Arab parties to secure a majority, but this would contradict his campaign promise to avoid such alliances, creating a difficult political dilemma.
Compounding the election aftermath are allegations of irregularities among Arab voters, with reports of bribery and intimidation. An investigation has been launched to explore these claims, highlighting the ongoing scrutiny of electoral integrity in Israel.
