War in Israel: My children’s new favorite song

The people of Israel are focusing on what’s truly important. We are still alive.

Political and social analyses of Israel, such as those we like to publish here at Israel Today, can provide a better understanding of our situation. But a song that sums everything up in a few verses and with a few melodies may do a better job.

Since the beginning of the war, some songs have reflected Israel’s mood and have become instant classics. A new song by Eyal Golan hits the nerve of the times again and has been topping the charts in Israel for weeks.

My children, too, have “Eyal Golan fever” and spontaneously break out into dancing and singing whenever I play them their favorite song. This also makes it easier for me to wake them up for school in the morning, because I simply play the song loudly on my cell phone and my three daughters (7, 8 and 10 years old) jump out of their beds and start singing and dancing. Our teenager also stomps out of his room with his eyes half closed. You can’t expect much more enthusiasm from him at the moment.

What is the name of the magical song that gives you, dear readers, an insight into our Israeli soul? Of course it is “Am Israel Chai!” This slogan has accompanied us since the beginning of the war, and in truth since the Exodus from Egypt, when we first entered the world stage as a people and began our long, painful journey through human history.

Today we no longer have prophets to comfort us in difficult times, but we do have singers like Eyal Golan and media like YouTube. Here is a translation of the song lyrics:

The people of Israel live (Am Israel Chai)

The sun will soon shine
We will know better days than these
The heart struggles with worry
All will return home
We will wait for them below
Hopefully we will hear good news

For the eternal people never fear
Even though it is hard to see
We are all together, no one is alone here
When the wars burn

The people of Israel live
If we do not forget to always be united
The people of Israel live
In rise and in fall, even in the hardest hours

God, the Blessed One, He watches over us
Who then can triumph over us
For we have no other land
We will make peace among ourselves
Watch over our children
For we have not lost our faith

My land is our inheritance
Our soul will not fall now
Around us, swords of iron
And the dove will spread its wings
The hope of two thousand years
We will take to the streets and sing again

For the eternal people fear not
Even though it’s hard to see
We are all together, no one is alone here
We will take to the streets and sing
