I work in a woodworking shop. Recently, a lady approached us with a request to build garden furniture for her. “We’d like to create a relaxing spot in the garden, with benches, a table, and a few planters.”
When we later worked out the corresponding offer, it became clear that we wouldn’t be the ones building the furniture, but rather a group of young people from Israel and Germany. My curiosity was piqued, and I asked if I could come by to take a look. “You’re very welcome. We’re the Leo Baeck Institute.”
The foundation
What a coincidence— for more than twenty years I’ve lived just one house away. I had often seen the modest company sign in passing: “Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem for the Research of the History and Culture of German-Speaking Jewry.” It is named after Rabbi Dr. Leo Baeck, who was the leading figure of German Jewry during the Nazi regime.
