Imam Hassen Chalghoumi, head of the French Conference of Imams, the Imam of Drancy in France, is a well-known public religious figure in the Arab world due primarily to his support for coexistence with the Jews and with the State of Israel.
Chalghoumi, who was born in Tunis, visited Israel recently with a delegation of Muslims from France. Following his meeting with the Israeli President and senior Israeli officials, I met with him at his request.
This is what Chalghoumi told me as soon as I met him at a hotel in Tel Aviv:
“It was important to me to come and get to know you as a man who influences the Arab world.”
He invited me to join him for dinner along with his wife and children.
Hassen Chalghoumi is one of the most well-guarded people in France. His home is guarded around the clock by 12 French police officers.
