“Operation Breaking Dawn” began after the arrest of the head of the Islamic Jihad in Judea and Samaria, Bassam al-Saadi, by IDF forces in the Jenin area. Israel took the battle to the “Saraya Al-Quds,” Islamic Jihad’s military arm. In recent years, these forces have become the second most important military force in the Gaza Strip after Hamas.
We have learned that although Hamas was present at the “war tent” set up to strategize how to exact vengeance on Israel for the killing of al-Saadi, it’s presence there was purely symbolic for the sake of public relations.
Israel, meanwhile, did all it could to prevent Hamas from joining the fighting.
Hamas in no way restrained the Islamic Jihad, but neither did it provide assistance. That, at least, is what Israel’s security establishment has concluded.
Israel, on the other hand, has long stressed that Hamas will be held responsible for any missiles fired from Gaza. So, what happened during Operation Breaking Dawn? Why didn’t Israel hit Hamas?
