I recently had one of the more singular experiences of my three decades in Israel. I heard a man who had been – to all appearances – part of that great and bitter enemy of Israel, the Lebanese Hezbollah; but who is now an Orthodox Jewish rabbi!
In the midst of the current Gaza war, and border skirmishes with that same Hezbollah, this was a most astonishing “testimony” to be hearing.
His name is Abraham Sinai, but he grew up as Ibrahim Yassin before making his almost-hallucinatory leap.
How could this happen?
His family suffered at the hands of the cruel Palestinian terrorists who had been expelled to Lebanon after being ousted from Jordan for insurrection, in 1971. When the IDF invaded to remove the Palestinian terrorists, Abraham viewed their presence as a help and improvement. He was a nominal Shi’ite Muslim teenager at the time. He had contact with Israeli security forces and began to inform them of Palestinian terrorist locations even before the age of 20.
