MembersTachles with Aviel – An Arab League summit without the Palestinians

Not even the Arab League wants to invite the Palestinians to the summit in Cairo, despite the fact its focus is on rebuilding the Gaza Strip.

The short of it is that both the Palestinian Authority (PLO) and Hamas were excluded from the upcoming summit. Both faced clear rejection when they tried to participate in the preparatory talks in Riyadh. The Arab governments told the Palestinians to submit their positions in writing. The Arab League is pushing the Palestinians into a secondary role in shaping the future of the Gaza Strip. On one hand, this is strange because the Arab media gives the impression that they are advocating for the Palestinian cause. But on the other hand, it’s not surprising because Arab governments have lost faith in the Palestinians—not only in resolving the conflict with Israel but also in sorting out their internal affairs. Now, a different approach is needed, and the best option would be for Israel to first destroy Hamas in Gaza. That would make things much easier for the Arab League. The Palestinians are nothing more than the classic case of Lot’s wife, who, in the biblical story, looked back instead of forward to the future.
