Israel Today readers who have visited Israel most certainly drove past this town as they were ascending from the coastal plain of Tel Aviv and central Israel, up into the mountains of Judea. It is on the last ridge west of Jerusalem, less than 1 km away. This modern Israeli town is named after the ancient Hebrew verse of Isaiah.
“O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, get thee up into the high mountain. O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, behold your God!” (Isaiah 40:9)
Mevaseret Zion is the place where the panoramic vista of Jerusalem suddenly hits your eyes; and the ethereal, holy city becomes a very tangible presence of stone and glass windows before you. As such, today the name has two connotations: A person declaring good news to Zion. The place that displays Zion, heralding and proclaiming you are almost at her gates.
