World reactions to Israel’s war on Hamas-ruled Gaza inevitably shifted over the past two years from shock over the savage October 7 massacres to full-throated support for Israel’s right to defend itself to criticism that the Jewish state had once again gone too far and risked further “radicalizing” the Palestinians. Somehow, we always arrive back to blaming the Jews.

Even educated, well-meaning people who are generally pro-Israel are today asking: Why did Israel have to flatten Gaza? One particular gentleman who could be described as an “expert” explained in a recent interview that the most valuable thing to Israel is world public opinion, which Jerusalem will need in order to survive times of greater crisis. His concern, and it was genuine, was that the images coming out of Gaza after more than 18 months of war are damaging Israel’s global image in a way that will take generations to repair.

And those same images, he further suggested, had ruined Israel’s ability to win hearts and minds among the Palestinians, which this gentleman argued was a far more powerful tactic...
