MembersThoughts for Shabbat

The verse “And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst” is one of the most revolutionary sentences in the Torah.

Weekly Portion – תְּרוּמָה – Terumah – Heave Offering – Exodus 25:1 – 27:19; Isaiah 60:17 – 62:3

A single verse turns our understanding of holiness upside down: “And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst.” Not in the building, but in them. With this, the Torah radically shifts the focus. The sanctuary is not a place for God, but a task for human beings. It is not about architecture, but about attitude. The real question is not “Where does God dwell?” but rather “Do we make space in our lives for His presence?”

The verse “And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst” is one of the most revolutionary sentences in the Torah. Logically speaking, it should have said: “that I may dwell in it,” meaning inside the Tabernacle (“Mishkan”). Yet the Bible chooses a far bolder formulation: “in their midst,” literally “in them.” This choice opens a door to a profound understanding of the relationship between human beings and God and of the true purpose of the entire sanctuary.
