Hungary’s incoming prime minister, Peter Magyar, confirmed that he had invited Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Budapest, but also suggested he would have the Israeli leader arrested upon his arrival.
During a press conference on Monday, Magyar was asked to comment on a statement by Netanyahu’s office that he had been invited to attend the 70th commemoration of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Magyar confirmed this, noting that he had invited all foreign leaders with whom he’d spoken since his Tisza Party won the April 12 general election.
Magyar was then asked about the stated intention of his predecessor, outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban, to pull Hungary out of the International Criminal Court over its efforts to prosecute Netanyahu.
Magyar said he would prevent Hungary from leaving the ICC, which led another reporter to ask what that would mean should Netanyahu accept the invitation to Budapest. He replied: “If a country is a member of the ICC and a person wanted by the court arrives on its territory, they will be detained.”
