Deputy FM calls for Israel to scrap Oslo Accords

Sharren Haskel says Israel remains bound to a failed framework while the Palestinian Authority acts as an enemy, not a partner.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel is pressing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to formally cancel the Oslo Accords, arguing that the agreements have become a strategic liability for Israel.

In a letter sent to Netanyahu on May 17 and made public Sunday, Haskel demanded that Israel officially declare the accords null and void on both the political and international levels. She said the framework, signed in the 1990s, continues to restrict Israeli sovereignty and security control in Gaza, Judea and Samaria long after its logic has collapsed.

According to Haskel, Israel has spent three decades honoring agreements the Palestinian Authority has repeatedly violated. She accused the PA of incitement, illegal activity in Area C and continued financial support for attackers through affiliated bodies.

Her point was blunt: Israel is still treating Oslo as a diplomatic structure while the other side treats it as cover.

Haskel argued that the accords limit the Israel Defense Forces’ freedom of operation and prevent Israel from exercising full security responsibility across the territory. She urged Netanyahu not to delay, saying Israeli citizens are paying for the hesitation with their security and sovereignty.

The deputy minister also criticized the postponement of a Ministerial Committee on Legislation discussion concerning the proposal.

Because the Oslo Accords were embedded into Israel’s legal system, Haskel said their cancellation must be advanced through legislation.

Thirty years after Oslo promised peace, its defenders are left defending a process. Haskel is asking the sharper question: how long must Israel remain bound to an agreement the Palestinian leadership buried in practice years ago?
