Growing concern in Israel that the emerging agreement with Iran could worsen the country’s strategic position.

“Trump tricked us,” said an Israeli official who wished to remain anonymous, referring to the emerging agreement with Iran. Another Israeli official said: “The emerging agreement looks very bad. From our perspective, it is a catastrophe because it does not meet any of the principles we discussed from the very beginning, when the military operation began at the end of February.”

A third Israeli official said: “First of all, it is not certain that there is even an agreement. And any agreement, whatever it may look like, will operate under the regional working assumption that it was signed under Iranian pressure and an American capitulation—and not the other way around. In any case, that is the mood in our region, and therefore any agreement will at least in the short term be considered a failure. I remain skeptical both about the signing of an agreement and about its durability over time.
