The emerging agreement between the United States and Iran, which according to reports could be signed in the coming days, probably in Geneva, is being received in Jerusalem with mixed feelings at best, and with deep concern in the less optimistic scenario. While the White House presents the move as a diplomatic achievement that could prevent a broad regional confrontation and keep Iran away from a military nuclear capability, assessments in Israel suggest that this is a bad agreement, even a catastrophe, because it does not meet any of the principles Israel spoke about from the outset, when the military campaign began at the end of February.
According to the details known so far, however, the emerging agreement does not include any significant handling of Iran’s missile array, does not require the dismantling of the regional proxy network, and does not address regime change. From the perspective of many Israeli officials, this is a missed rare strategic opportunity created by the military and economic pressure that was applied to Iran.
