For weeks, there has been discussion of a ceasefire, diplomacy, and a possible peace agreement between the United States and Iran.

Many observers have already begun speaking of de-escalation. Some even see the beginning of a new order in the Middle East. But anyone who listens more closely will recognize a very different picture. While commentators discuss peace and diplomats speak of progress, the key players continue to talk about war.

The Americans are talking about war. The Iranians are talking about war. The Revolutionary Guards are talking about war. The clerical leadership in Tehran is talking about war. And even representatives of the Trump administration openly emphasize that the military option is by no means off the table.

US President Donald Trump only recently threatened Iran once again with “annihilation.” The warning came after American retaliatory strikes against Iranian air-defense positions and drone depots, following what Washington said were attacks by Tehran on cargo vessels in the Persian Gulf and strikes against US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.
