A candidate for this special sacrifice is expected to come of age within the next two years. According to Numbers 19:2, we are talking about an “unblemished red heifer in which is no defect, and on which a yoke has never been placed.” An unblemished cow with red hide is rare. In biblical times a three-year-old red heifer was completely burnt up by a priest on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. Its ashes, mixed with water, served to purify the people from their sins before they entered the Temple.
