A particularly impressive mosaic from the 2nd or 3rd century was recently discovered at Caesarea. It covers an area of 3.5 by 8 meters (11.5 by 26.2 feet). The artistic quality is extraordinary. Every square meter contains about 12,000 densely-packed small stones. A Byzantine structure erected later on the site damaged the mosaic and kept it concealed until now.
On the mosaic there is an inscription in ancient Greek. Depicted are three male figures and colored geometrical patterns. The men wear togas, indicating that they are members of the upper classes. The central figure is facing forward, while the other two are facing sideways.
