The mainstream international media likes to emphasize only that latter, more negative aspect. At the Kalandia Checkpoint on the northern edge of Jerusalem’s municipal boundaries, Israel Border Police officers were recently alerted to the presence of a Palestinian mother and her three children. Something was off. It was a cold day, and the children were inadequately dressed. They didn’t even have shoes. The Israeli officers asked the Palestinian mother if everything was alright, and invited her in to the checkpoint’s office. The miserable family was served tea, and the mother was given a coat by one of the officers. Another Israeli immediately began collecting money from his comrades and went to buy shoes for the children at a nearby shop.
The mother was clearly moved. In tears, she revealed that her husband had beaten her and the children. “I knew you would help me,” the Palestinian woman told the Israeli soldiers. “I was sure of it.” As the family continued on their way...
