I gave examples of words from the same root—ידה—where “praise” (or “thanks”) does not make for a good rendering. Among the conclusive examples given were אודה [ODDE] in Ps. 32:5 and מודה [MODDE] in Prov. 28:13—both invariably rendered “confess” by the translators.

The very same אודה appears together with the very first time the name יהודה [YEHUDAH] is mentioned. In Gen. 29:35 we read:

 …הפעם אודה את‫-‬יהוה על‫-‬כן קראה שמו יהודה…

[HAPAAM ODDE ET-YHWH AL-KEN KAR’AH SHMO YEHUDAH]

This is translated: “…’Now I will praise the Lord’. Therefore she called his name Judah…” [Some versions have “this time” instead of “now”.]
