
It was exciting to watch on Al-Arabyia News the ceremony at the White House signing the Abraham Accords leading to the normalization of relations between Israel and the Persian Gulf States.
For me it was especially meaningful since it took place on the South Lawn just a few meters from the Rose Garden where the “Oslo Accords” were signed 27 years ago in 1993. It was impossible for those of us here in Jordan and around the Arab world not to compare these two agreements.
The Oslo Accords became a political embarrassment unprecedented in the history of Israel. Yasser Arafat, the head of the PLO at the time, was the founder of modern Arab terrorism, and yet, there he was being honored on that iconic White House lawn.
Desperate for peace, Israel went along with then Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to hand over lands, weapons, and money to the PLO, and Arafat was quick to put these resources to use....
