Israel has reason to be concerned about a possible turnaround by Russia over airstrikes against Iranian targets in Syria and even more so about developments around Iran’s nuclear program.
End of Israel’s freedom of aerial action in Syria?
Has Israel’s freedom of action against Iran’s military build-up in Syria come to an end?
That is the question Israeli experts and journalists are asking themselves after Syria-based Russian General Vadim Kulit told RIA Novosti news site that on July 25, the Syrian army used Russia’s BUK-M2E anti-aircraft defense system to destroy two Israeli cruise missiles fired from the air.
According to Kulit, two Israeli F-16 fighter jets fired the missiles from northern Syria, but other (Syrian) sources reported that the F-16s launched their missiles from within Lebanese airspace.
Lebanese media, such as the Beirut-based Morning Star, reported on Monday, July 26, that there is indeed an increase in Israeli activity in Lebanon’s airspace. This could also be heard from northern Israel.
