A biblical precedent for interpretation in relation to current events

I can still remember, as a boy, listening to a current events sermon on New Year’s Eve long ago, in 1980.

The Beast?

It stood out in my mind because the speaker announced that the apocalyptic beast was possibly in place: Greece was about to become the 10th country to join the European Union (EU). He said this was a possible fulfillment of the apocalyptic prophecy of the 10 horned beast in the New Testament Book of Revelation (13:1). Wow, that grabbed my attention!

Today, instead of 10, the EU has 27 members. Concern that the EU will any day now ignite the events of the apocalypse has subsided.
